Retro Lamp
Brief
To design and construct a floor standing uplight as a gift for Christmas.
Inspiration
The client approached me with three parameters to work with. The first was that the lamp was to be placed in a precise space in a hallway, the second was that the lamp had to be a floor standing uplight and the third was that the shade had to be constructed of wood.
Construction
With these three parameters in mind I set to work on exploring how to fabricate the lamp shade as this was going to be the most complicated outcome to achieve.
There are a number of ways to form timber into shapes, the most common being glue lamination or heat and both involve the use of formers.
After quite a while experimenting with various types of timber and methods of forming I opted for using glue lamination. With this information under my belt I set about designing the overall lamp.
The lamp shade was constructed of thin veneers of Hard Maple and the body of the lamp was locally source Oak. Having decided on the shape of the lamp shade this determined the design of the body of the lamp. A tri-legged form was decided upon.
Design agreed upon, it was full steam ahead.
