Oak & Ash Chest

Brief

To design and construct a chest to store toys.

Inspiration

Drawing inspiration from the Arts & Craft movement and Frank Lloyd Wright the concept was to keep the design simple due to a very tight build window.

Construction

Material available to me and in stock was oak and ash. Fortunately this timber was well seasoned and virtually ready to go but care still had to be taken when machining. Letting the timber rest between dimensioning and checking for any deviation and faults that can show up at this stage was important.

The side walls of the chest are fielded panels consisting of oak frames and ash panels with a coloured chalk paint wash.

The lid for the chest is of a bread board construction to reduce the chance of it warping and the under supports are tapered dovetail battens for added insurance.

All the ironmongery is hand forged and the chest is finish in my own wax oil mix which has a beautiful soft satin finish and is durable.
